0:00:02Alright. Officially, welcome everybody to this burnout workshop. Thank you guys for being here. I'm really stoked about this. This is gonna be really fun.
0:00:15A couple housekeeping things. I am using a new broadcasting software. I used it for a while before, but this is the first time using it again in a workshop.
0:00:48You can put it in the chat, you can unmute and stop me. Thanks again for being here. I appreciate your time and I prepared something pretty cool for you guys today around burnout.
0:01:28This is a subject that is near and dear to me personally and I deal with this specifically with a lot of my clients - lifelong athletes, high achieving entrepreneurs, business owners and what I consider corporate athletes.
0:01:47Let me define what I think of an athlete. I think of an athlete as more of a mindset - one of striving and personal growth and really trying to be the best version of yourself that you can be, that 10.0 version of you.
0:02:42The beauty of applied neurology is that it doesn't matter what you play. It doesn't matter if it's a physical pursuit or a cognitive pursuit. The foundations and fundamentals are the same. And we can improve performance dramatically when we work directly with the brain.
0:03:25The burnout conversation sits on the pain spectrum. If anybody's experienced burnout before, you know what I'm talking about.
0:03:58You're feeling wired and tired, you wake up sluggish in the morning, it's hard to get going. You have low energy during the day, and maybe you're super awake at night.
0:04:47A few years ago, the idea of having triplets running around, me chasing them, building a business, and trying to chase my own athletic goals would be absolutely insanity. I was stuck in this burnout cycle. But now I am at a higher level of performance and capacity than I've ever been in my life.
0:07:10Most high achievers think that when we start to get to that burnout peak state, we just start to feel depressed, cynical, exhausted. Then we try to power through. Does anybody get stuck in that loop?
0:08:06What if burnout isn't a willpower issue? What if it's not a motivation issue? What if it's just your brain saying "hey I need you to slow down." Burnout is actually a protective mechanism from your brain.
0:10:39Flow state is an altered state of consciousness that your brain shifts into - your peak performing state. In many ways flow is the antithesis to burnout. When we're in the flow channel, we don't burn out.
0:12:42I wanted to give you a quick version of my story in burnout. Like most things I do, I kind of take things to the extreme. I want you to be able to see yourself in this story so you can recognize it and stop yourself before you get to the point that I got to.
0:14:27This went on for a few years and I became very dysregulated. My mental health suffered, substance abuse issues were getting worse, I was getting injured more often, experiencing chronic pain, my sleep was horrible.
0:16:41On Christmas Day I was not good, I was shaking. I got sick for three weeks. I could barely get out of bed. It took another eight weeks to feel somewhat normal again because my nervous system, hormonal system, chronic fatigue - everything was so bad.
0:18:31The race car paradox - I was trying to run my life like a high-end race car but I had the emergency brake from my brain pulled the entire time. Just revving until I essentially burned up the engine.
0:20:17High performers don't burn out quite the same as most other people. High performers tend to miss or ignore the warning signs before it becomes too late and they just crash and burn.
0:24:17The top three signs you're burning out: exhaustion (physical, emotional and cognitive), cynicism and devaluation, and reduced sense of accomplishment.
0:26:46When you start to get cynical, you're burning out. You're starting to distance yourself from things you enjoy. You're devaluing things that usually give you fulfillment and joy.
0:38:36When you continue dysregulation for long enough, your nervous system shuts you down. The main thing is that the brain and nervous system influence and control all of it.
0:45:19The number one issue with burnout is dysregulated cortisol rhythms. Cortisol is crucial for deploying energy in response to stress. When it's working well it is your best friend. When it's not it can be your worst enemy.
0:47:18There are six burnout triggers: community, control, fairness, reward, values, and workload. These are from Christina Maslach, the godmother of burnout research.
0:57:12We've got three big ideas: neuro-training, cortisol and hormonal balancing techniques, and realigning the psychological and emotional mismatches.
0:58:37There are five ways to regulate your nervous system: interoception, vestibular function, proprioception, respiration, and cranial nerves.
1:09:04To raise morning cortisol: get direct morning sunlight for 10-20 minutes, novel movement and light exercise, strategic cold exposure, caffeine, grapefruit and black licorice.
1:11:07To lower evening cortisol: reduce overhead lights and blue light, consistent evening routine, breathwork focusing on the exhale, adaptogens like ashwagandha, and magnesium.
1:14:52Here's the seven-day reset plan. You're gonna fix your sleep, reset your brain and nervous system, re-energize your movement and body, find more flow and sync your rhythm with circadian rhythms and light.
1:15:35Day one: Install 4-10 high-payoff regulation drills and do them 10 times a day or more. Get morning sunlight, afternoon sunlight, and evening sunlight.
1:18:17Day four: Identify one or two things that are leaking energy. Doom scrolling might be the most important. Find things that are costing you energy and remove them.
1:19:11Attach your regulation drills to daily transitions. Before meetings, after you work out, before or after meals - do your regulation drills during all transition periods. It becomes automatic.
1:23:50For pushing through hard parts: Flow is the easiest way. Use visualization, train the hard parts in practice, and train your brain to be more adaptive and resilient.
